Proud of his maternal Dutch name, ‘Claessen,’  Russell has always felt a deep connection to the Dutch tradition of still life.  He first developed an appreciation for the genre while studying under the late Ann Schuler, who in turn had trained under Jacques Maroger (former technical director of the Louvre).
